Make sure to move when it's convenient for you and your family.
Hiring a mover to transfer your belongings is a risky endeavor if you don't know what you are doing. Cheap movers may look like a great deal, but often involve more expense due to damages incurred by an inexperienced team. Many cheap commercial movers focus on economy in order to keep customer's costs low. Economizing means hiring inexperienced people, packing (packers and movers) things snuggly together, and ultimately causing damage such as nicks and scratches in furniture. Commercial moves can involve expensive items such as copiers, computers, and other electronics that an untrained crew may not handle well. Little or no training can also cause hold ups in the loading process and overall smoothness of the entire operation, not to mention uncertainties about promptness and insurance. It's a pretty safe bet to say that the cheapest movers are also most likely the most unreliable ones. Word of mouth is also a great way to find a moving company. It is also important to make sure that all the details are discussed prior to the move and written in a solid contract that both parties sign. Checking certifications is also a great idea and can be done so locally by calling the State Department of Transportation and the Better Business Bureau. Also, take note of the condition of the trucks and blankets when the movers arrive. How a company cares for its tools is a good indicator of how it will care for your possessions. Be aware that most general insurance policies do not cover the moving process and so it is a good idea to purchase an additional policy that offers full replacement costs.
